- When is the foundation programme allocation for 2027?
- First-round allocation results are expected in March 2027. Trust-level programme preferences typically open April–May 2027, with final allocations confirmed by June 2027.
- How does the FP allocation process work?
- You are ranked nationally by your combined SJT and EPM score. Higher-ranked applicants pick first. You submit a ranked list of deaneries, and the algorithm matches you to the highest-preference deanery still available at your rank position.
- Can I choose which hospital I work at?

- What is the SJT?
- The Situational Judgement Test (SJT) is a national exam that contributes to your allocation score alongside your Educational Performance Measure (EPM). Together they determine your national ranking.
- How many doctors go through allocation each year?
- Around 10,000 doctors are allocated to foundation programmes each year across the UK, making it one of the largest annual medical workforce processes.
- What if I don't get my first choice deanery?
- It depends on your national ranking. If your score isn't high enough for your top pick, the algorithm places you at the highest-preference deanery still available. You can still influence your experience by ranking trust-level programmes strategically within whatever deanery you're allocated to.
- Can I swap deanery or programme after allocation?
- There is no official swap system run by UKFPO. However, some deaneries facilitate informal swaps between two applicants who mutually agree. Check your deanery’s specific policy — and be aware that swaps are never guaranteed.
- How does allocation work for international medical graduates (IMGs)?
- IMGs apply through the same UKFPO process and are ranked using SJT and EPM scores like all other applicants. However, EPM scoring can differ — for example, overseas degrees may receive different decile calculations. Check the UKFPO guide for IMG-specific EPM rules.
- What is the difference between UKFPO and FPAS?
- UKFPO (UK Foundation Programme Office) oversees the national allocation process, sets policy, and runs the SJT. FPAS (Foundation Programme Application System) is the online portal where you actually submit your application and preference rankings. Think of UKFPO as the organisation and FPAS as the website.
